Dragons departures for Will Harries and Adam Hughes

Campaign Series: Dragons departures for Will Harries and Adam Hughes Dragons departures for Will Harries and Adam Hughes

NEWPORT Gwent Dragons speedsters Will Harries and Adam Hughes will follow fellow back Dan Evans out of the door at Rodney Parade in the summer, writes Chris Kirwan.

Wing Harries and wing/centre Hughes are out of contract at the end of the season and have not been offered new deals.

The Dragons have already recruited Wales pair Lee Byrne and Aled Brew to strengthen their back three, signings that will lead to the departure of full-back Evans after a successful two-year spell.

He will be joined in saying his farewells in May by Harries and Hughes.

Harries, 26, has spent the last five seasons in Newport after returning to Wales from Northampton.

A series of livewire performances saw him win his first Wales cap on the tour to New Zealand in 2010 and he made further international appearances against Australia later that year and the Barbarians in 2012.

But director of rugby Lyn Jones is prepared to go into 2014/15 with Brew, Hallam Amos, Tom Prydie and Matthew Pewtner as his main options on the wing.

Hughes, 23, has fallen down the pecking order at the Dragons after being hindered by injuries.

He burst onto the scene with Bedwas and Newport in the Premiership, impressing with his pace and lines of running, and went on to have a superb breakthrough season at regional level in 2010/11.

Argus readers voted Newport-born Hughes as their player of the year after he scored 10 tries in 30 games for the Dragons.

That prompted talk of him having international potential but injuries have often denied him the chance to string together a run of games and he has made just eight appearances this season.

Pat Leach, Jack Dixon, Ross Wardle and Ashley Smith are currently fighting it out for spots in the midfield while 18-year-old Tyler Morgan made his debut in the LV= Cup and is a centre of undoubted promise.

Well they've been great servants to the Dragons - haven't been able to show their full talents over the years due to living off scraps from a series of poor midfields.

However, I am sure they will get snapped up pretty quickly.

Hopefully, we can pick up Henson when Bath drop him, then find a decent gnarly tighthead (there must be a valley psycho waiting to be discovered in the lower leagues!) and we'll have a challenging team next year!

True - but the one time he played well was under Lyn, and it would be nice to catch him for the last couple of years of his career (hopefully if he now has his head sorted out...)

The "Jones Boys" are really looking to change things for next season and bring in the older more established players to bring the youngsters on and with all the talk being around the backs, Brew (27) , Bryne ( 33) and Henson 31 ( posibility) ...I can see the major sponsor being "Zimmer Frames".
The press we want to see is , Dragons have now signed some decent forwards, because you can have as many has beens as you like in the backs, whether they have worked with the "Jones Boys" or not, cause unless they have a platform to feed off, they will struggle, just as Harries and Hughes have, infact while im on that subject good luck to both of them, theyre defence, committment and work ethics from the matches I saw has been excellent, it needed to be behind the packs that they have had to deal with these last few seasons !
Some would say," but we are the second region now", but we all know thats because The Blues and The Scarlets are having a bad run...but as always I will keep showing my head down at the Rodney Parade, looking out for the "Jones Sons" as they make the squad and Darren Edwards ends up as Team Manager !

Good luck to the boys! They deserve the chance of playing in a team with a good pack that wins some ball without going backwards, and players or should I say coaches looking to play a more expansive game. The performance in Italy says it all.Lets hope things do improve before next season as honeymoon period is over.Far to much money I would guess being spent on backroom staff etc when it should be spent on a couple of bruiser props.Henson next ? would not put it past us, please just focus on the front row and a hardened second row, otherwise its just a case of rearranged deckchairs and older ones at that.
