NATHAN Cleverly is officially out of his proposed St David’s Day return to the ring and could have fought his last fight with trainer and father Vincent in his corner.
Cleverly, 26, inactive since losing his undefeated record and WBO light heavyweight title last year to Sergey Kovalev, was announced last week for Frank Warren’s show at Aintree Racecourse on March 1.
Cleverly had previously been scheduled to fight in London, then in Monte Carlo, at the start of February as he switches to cruiserweight, but he is currently suffering with a back injury.
Cleverly caused a stir on Monday by tweeting that he wasn’t fighting in March (subsequently confirmed by Warren) and that he was “reviewing,” his training AND promotion team.
And the Cefn-Fforest fighter has sought out David Haye’s trainer Adam Booth, according to Vince Cleverly.
Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, Vince explained that the trial could lead to a more permanent arrangement.
He's trying things out with Adam Booth at the moment up in London to see how that's working out so there's a couple of different things that's going on,” Vince said.
"We've been together since 11 years of age.
"Sometimes there comes a time in life where you need to try different things.
"And Nathan has got to be taken out of his comfort zone.
"Because when he was home training with me, he wasn't quite doing things correctly and he was in his comfort zone too much.
"So by going up with Adam, Adam will make sure that he gets him out of his comfort zone and gets the best out of him."
Former Cardiff University student Cleverly is no stranger to Booth, having regularly used his London gym for sparring with the likes of Haye and George Groves.
Cleverly has been criticised for missing another fight through injury, but his close friend and mentor Joe Calzaghe has backed his decision to withdraw from a proposed scrap with Illunga Makubu , scheduled for 1 February in Monaco.
The ring legend commented: "If he's not 100% he shouldn't fight.
"If you're coming off a defeat you want to make sure you're 100% especially when you're getting up to a new weight division."
