A CLASH in howling wind and torrential rain wasn't the ideal way to start a reign as backs coach but it certainly didn't dampen Craig Warlow's enthusiasm for his new role at Newport, writes Chris Kirwan.

The Black and Ambers were downed 11-9 by Aberavon in a somewhat farcical Premiership encounter at Rodney Parade on Tuesday.

The horrendous conditions made the game a lottery and handling hazardous as Newport were edged out in their first game since December 21.

"We've been doing a lot of work structurally, tactically and on our conditioning so it was a shame that the game against Aberavon wasn't the icing on the cake," said Warlow.

"I was disappointed for the boys because I don't think they got what their efforts deserved."

The former Newport Gwent Dragons fly-half has succeeded Jon Bryant, who left his role before Christmas because of work commitments.

Warlow, who has previously coached Bridgend and Aberavon, has enjoyed grafting hard with his new charges on the training paddock.

"They are a good bunch of boys and I know Sven (Cronk, head coach) from way back so there have been no issues fitting in – I like the place and I like the people," he said.

"It's not ideal joining halfway through a season – you'd rather have a prolonged period of familiarisation and getting your methods on board – but the past six weeks have allowed me to do that.

"Most of the plays are the same wherever you are and everyone is just trying to get over that gain line, clear the tackle area and get the ball in space.

"Nothing changes a great deal. It's about doing those things consistently well to get the results."

Newport are next in action a week on Saturday when they travel to holders Pontypridd in the Swalec Cup and they have to wait until March 8 for their next home game.
