Bedwas out for Drovers revenge

First published in Sport

BEDWAS suffered last-gasp heartbreak that denied them a place in the Premiership playoffs last time they hosted Llandovery, writes Chris Kirwan.

It was a 11-try humdinger when the teams met at Bridge Field on a sunny April afternoon with the Drovers sneaking a 43-41 victory to snatch a semi-final spot from their hosts.

Barbarians rugby is not on the cards this evening given the heavy conditions and nor is quite so much up for grabs - second-placed Llandovery have title ambitions but seventh-placed Bedwas will struggle to force their way into the mix.

But Steve Law's side are on a strong run of form that has seen them win six of their last seven, including a hard-earned derby success against Cross Keys last time out.

"There's a lot of confidence in the squad," said the head coach. "We made a poor start to the season but have gradually got better.

"With a couple more wins we can put pressure on the teams above us, then who knows what can happen.

"But we know that we have to win our home games and Llandovery are a quality side that are second in the table.

"They can play either way, running rugby or being physical up front and carrying hard, so it's going to be a challenge.

"Like against Cross Keys, we will need to do the basics well and be strong in the set piece and at the restarts."
