AFTER an impressive victory against Division 1 Side PILCS in the Gwent Amateur Cup, The Welfare were hoping for another win against Blaenavon in the County Motors Cup.
The Welfare's last outing was a very impressive 5-1 victory against PILCS FC in the Gwent Amateur Cup and they were hoping to defeat another division side, Blaenavon Blues, in the fourth round of the County Motors Cup.
Due to severe weather conditions again, the tie was to be played on Abertillery 3G.
Blaenavon started the game the better of the two sides and were looking to get an early foothold in the game.
Ynysddu were having to defend in numbers to stay level as Blaenavon were exerting all the pressure.
Despite their dominance Blaenavon couldn't create any opportunities and The Welfare started to create a few chances of their own. The closest either side came to opening the scoring was a Ben Murphy free kick which was well saved by the Blaenavon keeper.
Blaenavon were trying to use the wind and playing several long balls to test The Welfare backline but they were holding strong, marshalled superbly by David Palmer.
With 30 minutes on the clock The Welfare got the opener. A long free kick from Tony Davies was headed back across goal by Ben Murphy and after a goalmouth scramble Jack Pewtner hammered the ball into the Bottom corner to give The Welfare the lead. 1-0 The remainder of the half was very even and Blaenavon almost found the equaliser when a superb volley from 20 yards whistled past the post to the relief of The Welfare.
A very tough first half for both sides with some strong challenges and plenty of passion on show.
The second half was going to be a tough 45 minutes for The Welfare if they were to progress.
Blaenavon were dominating the possession but everytime they looked like scoring, The Welfare backline came up with an answer. They thought they had equalised but a superb goal line block from Gareth Berry kept The Welfare in front.
Blaenavon were now totally dominating the game but couldn't carve out any clear opportunities to level the scores and The Welfare players were looking tired. Blaenavon had a few half chances but couldn't take advantage.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, a Blaenavon player got sent off for an off the ball incident which The Welfare hoped would work in their favour but it didn't stem the flow of attacks.
The last 5 minutes saw Blaenavon throw everything at The Welfare, with corner after corner being cleared by Ynysddu.
David Palmer and Tony Davies were playing out of their skins to keep Blaenavon at bay. With a minute left on the clock Blaenavon had another corner which would surely be their last chance.
The corner came over and was again cleared by the magnificent David Palmer. His header found Aaron Pewtner who played the ball into Ben Murphy who was breaking out of defence.
With the goalkeeper trying to get back to goal, Murphy struck the ball into the empty net from the halfway line with the last kick. 2-0 A fantastic defensive display from The Welfare to see the game out. Credit to Blaenavon who threw everything at The Welfare to try and win the game.
