LONDON 2012 stars Fred Evans and Andrew Selby will be available to represent Wales at this summer's Commonwealth Games, writes Andrew Penman.

The pair were expected to miss Glasgow 2014 because of their commitments with the International Boxing Association’s new Pro Boxing competition.

The competition allows boxers to compete on a professional basis while also remaining eligible to compete at the Olympic Games.

There had been no provision for competitors to compete at the Commonwealth Games.

But the start of the event has now been delayed until October, meaning both could be set to represent Wales after all.

Evans, aged 23, won a silver medal at London 2012 –Wales’ first Olympic boxing medal since 1972 – and is a former European welterweight champion.

At the time of his Olympic success he was part of the St Joseph’s gym in Newport under the tutelage of trainer Tony Borg but the pair have since parted company.

Fellow Olympian Selby, aged 25, became the first British fighter to defend a European amateur boxing title after winning flyweight gold in June 2013.

The news of the star duo’s availability may cause the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association to reconsider its selections for Glasgow.

As the Argus reported today, following the Welsh Elite Championships finals on March 28, the WABA Performance Commission met last Thursday to ratify the nominated team and the boxers were all then notified of the decision.

The official announcement of the team is not due until April 17 when Gwent fighters Sean McGoldrick, Joe Cordina, Kody Davies and Ashley Brace are expected to be named.

McGoldrick, who won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi after his Sri Lankan finalist opponent failed a drugs test, became a three-time winner of the Welsh Elite bantamweight category at the Cardiff House of Sport.

And Wales’ third ever Commonwealth Games gold medalist and now has a unique opportunity to become the first to double-up in Glasgow.

“I’ve proved I’m the best in Wales and I can’t wait for Glasgow,” said a delighted McGoldrick after his win over Briton Ferry’s Joshua Jones.

“It was a good competitive fight and it was nice to be back in Wales after being away for so long.”
