ST JOSEPH’S star Joe Cordina claimed another gold medal over the weekend, just days before the Welsh boxing team is announced for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

The 22-year-old amateur ace from Cardiff, who trains with Tony Borg at St Joes in Newport, was victorious in the 60kg final in the GeeBee tournament in Finland.

After beating Latvian Artjoms Ramlays 3-0 on day one and then Russian Vjatseslav Shipunov 2-1 in the semi-final, Cordina dominated the final from start to finish to overcome tough New Zealand fighter Chad Milnes 3-0.

Torfaen Warriors fighter Ashley Brace also made the final of her 51kg weight category in Helsinki but lost out 3-0 to England’s Lisa Whiteside .

Brace, who has been told that she will be representing Wales at Glasgow 2014, had done well to beat the quick and elusive Russian Olesia Gladkova 3-0 in her semi-final but was no match for Whiteside in the final and had to settle for silver.

Cordina’s St Joseph’s stablemate Sean McGoldrick, the and reigning Commonwealth champion at 56kg was disappointed to be beaten 3-0 by Kairat Eralijev from Kazakhstan in his first fight.

At 91kg Kody Davies from Pontllanfraith, who is also hoping to be selected for the Commonwealth Games, boxed extremely well in his first elite international bout against the strong and physical Askar Abdullaev from Kazakhstan.

Landing quality shots to his opponent, Davies was unlucky to lose the bout on a split decision against the eventual champion.
