SPECTATORS have been told to expect a no-holds-barred contest when Wales players battle for tour places in tonight's trial game at the Liberty Stadium.

The Probables take on the Possibles in front of a capacity crowd in Swansea and coach Danny Wilson doesn't expect it to be a glorified training session.

Boss Warren Gatland names his 31-man squad for the two-Test tour to South Africa around an hour after the final whistle and Wilson predicts the players will fly into each other in one last desperate bid to impress.

"I expect to see a full-on contest," said the highly-rated former Dragons forwards coach, who has been putting the Probables pack through their paces this week.

"I would imagine there are question marks over certain positions and probably some that are pretty solid. This is the last chance for people to answer those questions.

"The chat from the coaching group is they definitely see this as a trial and an opportunity for boys to get selected for the tour.

"You compare it to your home club training. If you put your two packs together, there is obviously a huge battle for places. You want to get into your opposite number and prove you are the better. There is your chance.

"Some of the players get that chance in league derby fixtures. Now, with this, there couldn't be a better fixture. It is like combining all your derbies into one."

The Possibles certainly boast a formidable pack that will be led by former Wales skipper Matthew Rees and includes bruisers Jake Ball, Ian Evans and Andrew Coombs.

That will, according to Wilson, be perfect preparation for the first teamers ahead of their encounter with the Springboks, who vie with Samoa for the honour of being rugby's most physical side.

He said: "Scrum, lineout and general play, they all know each other so well. Both front fives are strong, both back rows are extremely mobile and strong," he said.

"The big picture is picking the best of that to go and do a job in South Africa, which we all know is a huge challenge. Whatever pack of forwards go out there is going to have their hands full with the Springboks pack."
