NEWPORT lightweight Craig Woodruff is relishing his chance to shine live on Sky Sports tonight when he takes on Olympic champion Luke Campbell, writes Andrew Penman.

London 2012 gold medal winner Campbell returns to the ring for the first time in five months and Woodruff, who trains with Steve Sims at his Alway gym, is delighted to be the man picked for his comeback.

The call may have come at short notice but Woodruff didn’t need to think twice about accepting a shot at Campbell on the same bill as Nathan Cleverly’s clash with Alejandro Valori in Liverpool.

“Steve got the call last week and I said yes straight away,” said the former Welsh lightweight champ.

“It is short notice but I’ve kept myself fit and I’m just looking forward to showing people what I can do.

“My title fights were big for me but I suppose it will be my biggest fight so far,” added the 21-year-old.

“It’s a great opportunity for me and I want to make a positive impression and maybe cause a shock.”

Campbell took time off for family reasons after racing to 5-0 in the paid ranks with four stoppage wins since turning pro in July 2013, with his last action a final round stoppage of Scott Moises in February in his first eight-round test.

“It has been five months or more and I am looking forward to getting back in the ring,” said Campbell. “The break has given me a good opportunity to spend time with my family and I have always been in the gym ticking over and working on certain things.

“Now everything is steady and good everybody in the family wants to see me back in the ring and doing what I do best.”

Campbell returns to action on a stacked bill in Liverpool as bitter rivals Tony Bellew and Cleverly continue to move towards a rematch as they face their second fights at cruiserweight against Julio Cesar Dos Santos and Valori respectively.
