SCOTT Quinnell believes Newport Gwent Dragons will profit from fired-up powerhouse number eight Andy Powell wanting to sign off with a bang.

Powell insists that he has plenty left in the tank after returning to Rodney Parade on an initial one-season deal but the 33-year-old is undoubtedly in the autumn of his career.

However, his fellow former Wales and Lions number eight Quinnell believes that is not necessarily a bad thing – it will ensure the Dragons will benefit from him being fully focused with the desire to make every minute count.

"Andy is a fantastic signing by the Dragons," said Quinnell, who won 52 caps for Wales. "We know what a quality rugby player he is and I am sure the coaches will bring the best out of him.

"He is at the stage of his career when he knows that there are not too many seasons left and that every one counts.

"I saw him the other day and told him his that you are a long time retired and that he should make the most of it every time that he puts his boots on.

"I know that he has a focused mind after coming back to Wales from Wigan and I am sure that he will showcase his talents.

"He also has a responsibility to the Dragons' younger generations now as a senior pro; that's a change for him and I am sure he will do very well as a role model.

"With the experience of the likes of Andy, Lee Byrne and Aled Brew to go along with the youngsters coming through I believe that the Dragons are one of the sides to watch in the Pro12."

Quinnell is relishing the change to see how the Rodney Parade region get on this season first hand.

The 42-year-old is a key member of the Sky Sports team that will broadcast 33 Guinness Pro12 games with a September 20 trip to Newport inked in his diary.

"There is no tougher place for teams to go than Rodney Parade but I am thoroughly looking forward to going back there," said the Llanelli great. "We are down there in week three for the Glasgow came and I am really excited."
