RYNARD Landman says Newport Gwent Dragons need to get physical when they travel to Guinness Pro12 title hopefuls Glasgow on Sunday after being outmuscled on their own patch.

The Rodney Parade region have won just one of their eight league games this season and head to Scotland on the back of an embarrassing 38-12 home defeat to Munster when the Irish province turned around a 9-7 half-time deficit.

The Dragons haven’t mustered a Pro12 point since September and few will give them a chance at Scotstoun Stadium against a Warriors side that triumphed 33-13 in Newport earlier this season.

Landman, who is captaining the Dragons in the absence of injured captain Lee Byrne, acknowledges they need to be stronger in attack and defence if they are to cause an upset.

“We couldn’t get out of our own half,” said the South African lock. “Munster started playing more directly and won the physical battle, getting over the gain line.

“Even when we carried the ball they were hitting us back, meaning the kickers were under pressure and were 10 metres short, giving Munster front foot ball.”

The Dragons have improved their tight game this season but literally took several steps backwards against the Irish province.

“We conceded three tries from driving lineouts and that is not good enough,” said Landman.

“We have to work harder on that and identify what they did differently to other teams.

“Northampton Saints didn’t even score one against us and they have a very big pack. We need to step it up.”

The Dragons’ second-half performance against Munster led to sections of their own supporters booing at the final whistle.

“We are disappointed to hear the reaction but we need to give the supporters something to be positive about,” said Landman, one of the success stories of a woeful start to the campaign.

“We owe them a big one and we just need to work harder to make them proud. We brought in a lot of players this season and need to start making things happen now.”
