DARREN Edwards believes that Jonathan Evans will bring a spark to Bath after it was confirmed that the scrum-half is heading to the Rec from Newport Gwent Dragons, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 22-year-old will leave Rodney Parade at the end of the season to join the Aviva Premiership title hopefuls where he will tussle with Niko Matawalu, Chris Cook and Will Homer for the number 9 jersey.

Former Dragons head coach Edwards believes that Evans, from Bargoed, will thrive behind Bath's imposing set of forwards.

"Having known Jonny since he was a youngster and seen his development for myself, I know he'll fit right in here at Bath," said Edwards, himself a former scrum-half who also coached Evans with Wales Under-20s.

"He brings a spark to the game and he's very much at an exciting stage of his career. He's joining a club that has a fantastic forward pack and he'll thrive on playing off such a strong platform."

Evans has made 75 appearances for the Dragons and was voted by Argus readers as their player of the 2012/13 when his stellar efforts were unlucky not to result in a place on Wales' tour to Japan.

He fell behind Richie Rees in the pecking order last term but has been the region's starter in recent weeks.

With the Dragons aiming to finish above Cardiff Blues in the Guinness Pro12 and also beat their nearest rivals in the quarter-final of the European Rugby Challenge Cup, Evans wants to finish on a high.

He said: "Playing for my home region since I was a teenager is something I'll always be extremely proud of, and I'm hoping to join Bath next season having finished on a high with the Dragons."
