TORFAEN Tigers are aiming to cut out the costly errors when they host Welsh rivals The Raiders at Cwmbran on Sunday in week two of the RFL Conference South (kick-off 2.30pm).

The pair are newcomers to the league and had mixed fortunes on opening weekend with the Llanelli-based Raiders beating last year's league champions Valley Cougars 34-6 while The Tigers fell away at Leicester Storm 28-16.

Tigers' coach Jamie Williams said: "Last week we were punished with mistakes that we would have got away with in the Welsh Conference last year. We were competitive with a makeshift side and proved we deserve to be at this level.

"We have regrouped in training this week and we now look forward to our home opener on Sunday – a Welsh derby against The Raiders, who showed last Saturday with a big win against the Cougars that they will be no pushovers."

Raiders director and assistant coach Andrew Thorne said that his club were delighted at their opening day win and they will be hoping to build on this in Cwmbran on Sunday.

"The rest of the board, the coaching staff and I were pleased with how Saturday went," he said. "The lads played some good rugby against an experienced Cougars team who had the help of some Scorpions players.

"The hard work that the lads have put in the last couple of months paid dividends with a convincing win.

"However we are under no illusions that we have a long way to go and have to perform as well if not better for the whole season, starting with our first away trip to Torfaen on Sunday.

"Torfaen are a good outfit and will be hurting from their defeat last Saturday. The lads know they are in for a game that will be full of big collisions, very similar to the Cougars encounter."

Valley Cougars have made a number of changes to their club structure ahead of their first home game of the season in the RFL Conference South.

The 2014 champions take on Leicester Storm tomorrow at Glyncoch RFC (kick-off 2.30pm) following their defeat to the Llanelli-based Raiders RL last Saturday in the season opener.

Paul Emanuelli has moved on from his position as head coach of the club after four years of service and will now concentrate on his playing and coaching roles at South Wales Scorpions and the Wales Rugby League international set up.

The former Blackwood fly-half will remain at the Cougars as director of rugby and the Cougars have appointed joint head coaches in Dafydd Hellard and Steve Bray.
