MR Dennis Dowson, 41, of Sandyford Road, Newcastle, and Mr Lesley Massey, 37, of Howdon, Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, appeared at Dumfries Sheriff Court yesterday, charged with having in their possession three peregrine falcon eggs and three peregrine falcon chicks, contrary to the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

The men, who were arrested near Moffat, made no plea or declaration and the case was continued.

Butcher sighted

TWITCHERS are heading for the Highlands following a rare sighting of a red-backed shrike - nicknamed the Butcher - in Kincraig, Speyside. The bird, which became extinct in Britain in the early 1980s, and is usually found in southern and eastern Europe, earned its notoriety for its habit of impaling its prey on thorns or barbed-wire.

Shares fraud

Butcher Alastair Hall, 47, of Merse Road, Kirkcudbright, who admitted four charges of fraud involving the application for 5176 shares in the privatisation of six companies, was fined #2500 at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court, yesterday. Hall formed a scheme to obtain shares by fraud using other people's names.

Officer for trial

Central Scotland Police Constable Steven William-son, 22, stationed at Balfron, was sent for trial on June 11, after he pleaded not guilty at Stirling Sheriff Court, yesterday, to punching Mr Andrew Millar on the face to his injury, in the Meadowpark Hotel, near Stirling University, on October 3.

TWO dozen divers from St Andrews University Sub-Aqua Club are to swim with sharks at Deep Sea World, in North Queensferry, on Monday, to raise money for sonar equipment to prevent whales becoming stranded in the Firth of Forth.

A BRITON who moved to the Czech Republic and wanted her bank statements forwarded to her new address, was aghast to find her first communication from the Leeds Park Row branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, contained its obviously preferred spelling - Cheque Republic.

Key to loch speed

RADAR speed guns are to be used for the first time on MoD police boats at the Clyde Marine Unit, to monitor vessels on Loch Long and Gareloch during Operation Governor, which runs from June 14 until July 31. A general speed limit of 12 knots on the lochs and seven knots in the Rhu Narrows has been in force since 1967.
