Rangoon, Monday

A BOMB has exploded at the house of one of Burma's senior military officials, killing his daughter.

The explosion at the home of hard-line Lieutenant-General Tin Oo, Secretary Two of the ruling State Law and Order Restoration Council and army chief of staff, happened on Sunday night.

The victim was his eldest daughter, Cho Lei Oo, 34, a mother-of-two.

Initial investigations showed the explosion was caused by a parcel bomb. No-one has yet been blamed for the attack.

One diplomat said officials told him that General Tin Oo was not injured in the attack, although there were rumours he had been sent to hospital afterwards.

Heightened security was apparent today on Rangoon's streets, mostly near Tin Oo's home in an elite residential neighbourhood. Armed troops and police stood on many streets although they were not seen stopping pedestrians or vehicles.

In December two bombs exploded at a Buddhist shrine in Rangoon, killing five people and wounding 17. - Reuter.
