THERE was renewed hope last night that the pay dispute affecting universities across the UK could be resolved before the summer, allowing thousands of students to graduate.

Acas, the conciliation service, has agreed to convene fresh talks between lecturers and university employers on Tuesday.

The Association of University Teachers (AUT) began industrial action in March with a one-day strike and boycott of assessments. Although it did not immediately affect most students, as it continues it could see thousands failing to graduate because staff will not mark their final exams.

Sally Hunt, of the AUT, said: "We are pleased that talks are at last taking place." The Universities and Colleges Employers Association also welcomed the move.
