THE number of students at Glasgow Caledonian University who are having

to work part-time has reached 74%, of whom 84% think this affects their

studies, according to a survey carried out by the National Union of

Students. Of those working during term, 56% do eight hours or more and

18% exceed 16 hours a week. The survey showed that 86% of students were

in debt at the beginning of this term, and 52% estimate their debts will

be more than #1000 by the end of the term.

Mr Douglas Trainer, president of the NUS in Scotland, said: ''The

Government is making it impossible for students to concentrate on their

studies. Students' final degree mark may end up reflecting their bank

balance rather than their ability. The NUS is determined to make the

Government think again on loans.''
