SCOTLAND'S first chair of palliative medicine is to be established at

Glasgow University, through a #1.2m grant provided by the Dr Olav Kerr

Charitable Trust and the Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund. The discipline

focuses on the quality of life for patients who are undergoing

treatment, and will include research on the management of pain and the

psychological and social impact of serious illness. Dr Kerr, who died

seven years ago, was a consultant at the Western Hospital and Gartnavel

General Hospital in Glasgow.
