A PRISONER died after a fight in a jail TV room over a rugby

international being screened at the time, it was disclosed yesterday.

David Matthews, 36, from Cardiff, serving 12 years for conspiracy to

supply drugs, died at Long Lartin Prison near Evesham, Worcestershire,

on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Bob Mullen, head of operations at Long Lartin, said Matthews was

involved in a fist fight with another prisoner in the TV room. ''We

believe it was something to do with the rugby. He suffered head injuries

and was taken to the prison hospital. Unfortunately, it was impossible

to revive him.''

West Mercia Police said a 29-year-old inmate was being questioned by

detectives.
