A TIME capsule was recovered yesterday after a century encased in the

pier of the Aberdeenshire village of Collieston.

The 9in copper cylinder was placed below the foundation stone by Lady

Gordon Cathcart on October 17, 1894.

It contained coins and some newspapers.

Yesterday, Hunter Construction, which is involved in renovating the

pier, recovered the capsule.

The plan was to take it to Arbuthnot Museum in Peterhead.

However, when workers reached the casket they found it already open.

It had eroded and the printed items had dissolved into a green mush.

The coins were in virtually mint condition and will be taken to the

museum for examination.
