FIVE disabled people left Glasgow's George Square yesterday on a

gruelling journey to London to campaign for their civil rights.

The demonstrators, some in wheelchairs, expect to take 30 days to

reach their destination.

Mrs Rosemary Burns, co-ordinator of the protest, said: ''The march is

mainly to heighten public awareness of the need for legislation to ban

discrimination against disabled people.''

Two Bills which tried to achieve this recently have been thrown out of

the Commons, angering many disabled people and leading to the march.

Mrs Burns added: ''We have the support of many organisations for the

disabled including the Disability Alliance, the Muscular Dystrophy

Group, Mencap, the Spastic Society, the Royal National Institute for the

Blind, and, of course, the STUC.
