JOHANNESBURG: Gunmen murdered six blacks in an ambush of a minibus

yesterday, all of them members of South Africa's Zulu-based Inkatha

party. Cyril Ramaphosa, secretary general of the African National

Congress, warned that the run-up to next April's election would be

afflicted by violence ''on a scale we haven't even imagined''. ''I fear

democracy could be drowned in blood,'' he said in a newspaper interview.

''Unless we all do something new, and soon, we risk losing all we as a

nation have gained.''
