FOLLOWING recent fire deaths in rented properties, Edinburgh-based

Newington Property Managers are fitting smoke alarms in all properties

under their management.

''Since 1988 all new furnishings have had to comply with fire safety

standards,'' said Angus Gunn of Newington.

''As yet, this legislation doesn't apply to rented property, where

furniture is often second-hand, although moves have been made to bring

tenanted property into line. The National Association of Estate Agents

has asked the Government to phase in the regulations for rented property

to allow landlords time to upgrade.
