DEBORAH KERR was one of our greatest actresses, as she showed time and again when she starred opposite major male stars such as Yul Brynner, Robert Mitchum and Burt Lancaster.

It's true what her agent said - she was an actress of terrific elegance and grace.

She never got mixed up in scandal and was always polite and impeccably behaved towards her fans.

Can we say the same of many of today's young female stars, with their obscene and barely justifiable salaries, their lack of dignity while getting out of cars, and their hard-partying lifestyles?

Stars such as Deborah must have shaken their heads when reading of the antics of their modern counterparts.

RIP, Deborah. You will be missed. M S, Glasgow No mail sympathy

DO Royal Mail employees think everyone is sympathetic towards them and their strike? Well, I'm not.

We returned home from holiday last week to find a card saying a recorded delivery letter could not be left as there was nobody in to sign for it. Fair enough.

I went to collect it at the sorting office but it couldn't be found. When I returned the next day it was still missing.

Then I was told the postman was a casual who had probably taken it home and it wouldn't reappear until the following Saturday!

I spent the rest of the week trying to take up my complaint but was fobbed off.

Recorded delivery seems to be unreliable and unsafe, which somewhat defeats the purpose. Maybe I'll get my letter next weekend. Iain Maclean, Cambuslang Kerb crawler move

NEW legislation to penalise kerb crawlers will be welcomed by most women.

Innocent females city-wide can't walk the streets without being harassed by some creep in a car. Well done to Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill. J Brown, Glasgow What is affordable?

I REFER to your article headlined Gap sites plan will create 550 cheap-to-buy homes' (Evening Times, October 18).

It goes on to say the only way Govan will fully benefit is to build affordable homes.' What no-one ever seems to consider is that what is affordable to some people is not affordable to others. No official ever defines what the term actually means. Derek Cooney, Springburn Danger for officers

YOUR story about the rise in attacks on the police shows just how dangerous it is out there for officers.

Are the courts handing out deterrent sentences on those who attack police officers?

These figures indicate that people continue to assault officers indiscriminately, regardless of the consequences.

Could the Evening Times find out what happens to offenders who assault police officers and let readers know? Big Al, Glasgow WHAT DO YOU THINK? Email your views to us here. A GOOD piece of investigative journalism. I am just surprised those hostels are still open.

I am curious to know if those other councils are breaking some sort of rule by sending the social work cases to Glasgow. Meep, Shawlands Shame on councils

IT is to the shame of councils outside Glasgow that they use the Queen's Park Hotel. You have to ask how Glasgow can declare McKever "not a fit and proper person" to hold an HMO licence but other areas can place homeless people in his care.

I have spoken to Homeless Units at neighbouring local authorities and they all know about the anti-social behaviour but continue to use these places. They don't care.

The law needs to be changed to stop councils dumping their problem cases outside their own areas.

Mr McKever may not care about the damage his residents do to the local community, but then neither do councils. Andrew M, Shawlands They waste our money!

WHY not dump the people in these hotels at Mr McKever's new house?

Or the homes of some of our council officials? There would be a change of tune then, I bet. Nothing new in hearing the council will do anything to avoid hassle and don't care if they waste our money. Vote them out! N S 00, Glasgow Cast off these low-lifes

SEND these low-lifes to an island somewhere that tourists don't want to visit. Jonny Bond, Glasgow Listen to decent people

NO wonder Glasgow has such a bad name. Not only do we have to put up with our own criminals, but we have to suffer other councils' ones too. Glasgow City Council should start listening to the decent people of the city - you know, the ones who pay their wages. Ray Paterson, Glasgow Let them live at his pad

PUT the criminals and junkies at Mr McKever's new pad, let them have parties, use drugs, cause havoc and mayhem, and let him get a taste of what is being inflicted on others. Coco, Glasgow It's profits that count

IT'S all money and profits to McKever. He doesn't need to worry other than what's going into his bank account. Jefstewa, Govan
