A MAN has been arrested in connection with a security van raid.

Strathclyde Police confirmed a 32-year-old is being questioned over a robbery at the Spar supermarket and Post Office in Aurs Drive, Barrhead.

More than £10,000 was stolen during a cash delivery to the shop shortly before it opened at 8am yesterday.

Two Securicor guards had brought the cash to fill the ATM machine at the shop.

Police sealed off the area while forensic tests were carried out.

Staff in neighbouring shops were told to leave their units while the probe was being carried out.

Strathclyde Police spokesman confirmed a five-figure sum had been stolen in the raid.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a robbery at the Spar Supermarket in Aurs Drive, Barrhead."

A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal and he was expected to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court later today.

It is the latest in a spate of security van raids in the west of Scotland this year.

In March two masked robbers stole more than £10,000 from two security guards making a delivery in Victoria Road, Govanhill, while in February, masked men stole £25,000 during a cash delivery in Merkland Court, Partick, Glasgow.

Days before a van containing a five-figure sum was stolen from West Princes Street, in the West End.
