ST Joseph’s star Joe Cordina has eased through to the second round at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha, writes Andrew Penman.
The 23-year-old, who won lightweight bronze for Wales at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, has now set his sights on a medal for Team GB in Brazil.
Cordina and seven other members of the GB Boxing squad have their first opportunity to qualify for Rio in Doha this week.
The tournament, which runs until October 15, is the first of four qualification events for male boxers for Rio.
And Cardiff-born Cordina, who trains with Tony Borg at St Joes in Newport, started with a comfortable win over Australian Josh Keirl in the 60kg preliminaries.
The European champion from St Mellons comfortably outboxed his opponent in each round and will now face Korean Chol Guk Kwon in the next round of the competition on Friday
Great Britain boxers secured three wins from three on the second day of World Championships as Josh Kelly saw off another Australian in Nathan Webber in his 69kg preliminary and Joshua Buatsi secured a win over a tough Korean Hyeongkyu Kim at 81kg.
Webber next takes on New Zealand’s Joshua Nyika, while Buatsi will now face double world champion Julio La Cruz from Cuba on Friday.
