WALES defender James Chester admits he’s questioning his future at Premier League outfit West Brom after falling out of favour with Newport-born boss Tony Pulis.

The £8 million summer signing from relegated Hull City has been a key feature for Wales throughout the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, but has featured just twice for his club in the Premier League this term, starting only on the opening day of the season.

And after Wales’ 3-2 defeat to Holland, Chester was surprisingly candid in his assessment of his West Brom future.

And the ex-Hull defender, who scored in the 2013 FA Cup final, admits he was merely happy on Friday to get a run out.

“I'm a little stiff now but for the first hour it was nice to be out on the pitch,” Chester explained following Friday’s 3-2 reverse.

“After that there were a couple of loose passes but I know to be playing at this level I have to start playing for my club because it's impossible to play at this level and not be playing for your club week-in, week-out.”

But is there pressure on Chester to maintain his Wales slot? He believes so.

“I know myself I need to be playing at my club to give me the best chance of going to France and playing when we get there. I don't think it's good enough to be playing for Wales when I'm not playing for West Brom.”

Chester hasn’t spoken with Newport’s Pulis specifically about his disenchantment, but admits he always knew Pulis intended to switch him to full-back.

“I spoke to the gaffer six to eight weeks ago to ask him how I would get into the team. I played the first game of the season and he said he understood it was a new club and a new position and we had some work to do, but up to the part of speaking to him I hadn't done much work regarding playing right back,” he explained.

“I asked him how I would get back if not doing the things he said to me. But I believe in the ability I have and I'm trying to stay professional and keep myself right for when I get the chance because when I get there I feel I'm good enough to stay in the team.

“When I signed he (Pulis) said he knew I could play at centre-half but he wanted to use me at full-back which I don't really have a problem with as long as I'm playing in the Premier League which is where I want to be.

“I think the disappointing part for me is I played the first game of the season and I think I showed enough with hard work and playing there regularly is something I could become to be quite good at. But to only give me one opportunity there I find it quite difficult to understand.”

And that has led to Chester questioning his future in the West Midlands.

“I'm 12 games into a four year contract, but I'm not one who likes to sit and watch,” he said.

“I want to play and I thought I was coming to West Brom to play in the Premier League. Hindsight's a wonderful thing and you see how Hull are doing at the start of the season and I had other options which makes the situation a little more difficult.”
