NEWPORT Gwent Dragons Premiership Select really mean business for their British and Irish Cup clash with Jersey this weekend.

Coaches Greg Woods and James Chapron make just two changes to the side which walloped Connacht Eagles 34-10 away last weekend to get their campaign off to a flying, and bonus point winning, start.

Wales international Aled Brew comes in on the wing for Newport flyer Elliot Frewen while highly promising young Cross Keys prop Leon Brown replaces Lloyd Fairbrother on the tighthead.

Captained again by Dragons hooker Hugh Gustafson, the coaches have proved they certainly won’t be taking English Championship side Jersey lightly when their side hosts them in front of the S4C television cameras at Pandy Park tomorrow (SUN) (kick-off 3pm).

The region’s captain Thomas Rhys Thomas is on the bench as Gustafson’s understudy, the 33-year-old a vastly experienced player who won 27 caps for Wales.

Woods said: “It’s a strong side again with a good mix of seasoned veterans and promising young talent.

“We wanted to maintain consistency after the victory out in Ireland and if we have any aspirations of getting out of our group, we simply have to win this weekend.”

The Gwent side top Pool Five after their comprehensive opening victory, scoring four tries at Galway’s Sportsground last Saturday.

Frewen, Ebbw Vale centre Adam Jones and scrum half Luc Jones all crossed the whitewash, while the visitors were also awarded a penalty try.

Gifted outside half Angus O’Brien kicked three conversions and penalty, while Wales Sevens man Geraint Rhys Jones also slotted over a conversion and a penalty.

Jersey were held at home 22-22 by Doncaster last week in their first group encounter, although the Channel Islands outfit were unlucky not to get the victory after missing a late penalty.

Brendan Cope’s 40-metre attempt sailed wide at St Peter at the death after the hosts had battled back from a 22-5 deficit.

A much-changed Jersey squad travel to the Gwent Valleys this weekend with changes in all seven positions in the back division and four new faces in the forwards from last week’s starting XV.
