AMATEUR boxing fans will head to the Parkway Hotel in Cwmbran tonight for a combined Torfaen Warriors and Cwmbran ABC show.

There will be 10 bouts, starting at 8.30pm, and entry is £10 on the door.

Torfaen Warriors head coach Simon Weaver is celebrating after his star female pupil Chloe Thomas won gold in the 57kg class at the Golden Girl Championship in Sweden last weekend.

Held in Borås, Sweden’s 13th biggest city, the tournament had 236 entrants from 17 countries but Thomas was the only entrant from Wales.

But the trip, funded by Torfaen Warriors and her father Gareth, proved worthwhile as she beat home favourite Nakita Lunberg in the 57kg final.

The 24-year-old travels from her home in the Port Talbot area to train with Weaver in Cwmbran twice a week and she is the current senior Welsh champion at 57kg.

Fellow Torfaen-trained fighter Lewis Howells has also been gaining valuable experience overseas as he represents Wales in the European Youth Championships in Poland this week.

Howells, the current Welsh junior champion at 69kg, reached the quarter-finals having also recently reached the last-eight of the Ahmet Comet Cup in Turkey.

He is Wales’ last surviving medal hope in Ko?obrzeg after he outboxed Latvia’s Ritvars Sulga to stay on course for a podium finish.

“I think my opponent was good and hungry but I wanted to keep coming forward, throw a lot of punches and keep my opponent on the back foot from the first round,” said Howells.

“I am fit after the contest and ready to go again. After four months of hard preparations leading up to the championships I am ready to win a medal.”

The 18-year-old from Newport won gold at the Pirkka Cup in Finland last year and is now set to join the Team GB squad in preparation for the 2020 Olympics.
