WALES will play Northern Ireland in the second round of Euro 2016 on Saturday after the qualification process for the last-16 was completed tonight.
The Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 victory over Italy means they qualify in third place in Group F and in the process Martin O’Neill’s men knocked out Turkey – Wales’ other potential opponents.
After losing to England in Group B, Wales will therefore have another all-British tie against Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland in Paris.
It will also mean Chris Coleman’s men will be up against former Newport County AFC striker Conor Washington.
And, after a 1-1 friendly draw between the sides in March, Coleman knows what to expect.
“We know Northern Ireland will be more physical than Turkey,” he said. “They get the ball forward a bit quicker, that is where their strength is, they are superbly organised and defensively so difficult to break down. They are excellent from set plays.”
The full draw for the last 16 is as follows: Switzerland v Poland, Croatia v Portugal, Wales v Northern Ireland, Hungary v Belgium, Germany v Slovakia, Italy v Spain, France v Republic of Ireland, England v Iceland
