CARDIFF’S Rhys Saunders will now face Jason Easton at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh this Friday following Mitch Buckland’s decision to vacate his Celtic super-lightweight belt.

St Joseph’s boxer Buckland pulled out of his planned fight with Easton and relinquished the title after wife Rachael’s fall which has left her fighting for her life.

Her husband, who won the strap with a points defeat of Ally Black in Newport last October, was due to make the second defence of his belt on the Cyclone Promotions show in Scotland.

Understandably, his focus is firmly on his wife, who fractured her skull and suffered a bleed on the brain in the accident at the couple’s home in St Mellons.

However, St Joseph’s will be represented in Edinburgh on Friday with British flyweight champion Andrew Selby in action.

Selby is set for his first outing since capturing the Lonsdale Belt against Louis Norman in May, in what was just his fifth outing in the pro ranks.

On this occasion he faces a fellow unbeaten fighter in the shape of Nicaragua’s Hermogenes Elizabeth Castillo, a 21-year-old with 11 straight wins to his name.

Castillo has won four of those inside the distance but until now has never fought outside of Central America as a professional.

The non-title fight is scheduled for 10 rounds on a bill that also features two Commonwealth title showdowns.

Meanwhile, after changes of opponent and venue, Lee Churcher is now set to fight for the WBU world middleweight crown at Cwmbran Stadium on Saturday, December 3. The identity of his opponent is expected to be revealed soon.

Elsewhere, there was bad news for another Gwent boxer, as Bradley Pryce's rematch with Justin Menzie was called off.

Pryce stopped Menzie inside three rounds last month and the two were set to square off again at York Hall on November 12.

But the Pryce camp were informed on Monday that Menzie had withdrawn through injury.

It is understood that the Welshman could now challenge Belfast's Alfredo Meli for Celtic honours.
