KINGSLEY Jones says Newport Gwent Dragons' recent French record gives them reason to believe they can upset the odds at Brive to earn a European Rugby Challenge Cup quarter-final.

The Dragons head to the Stade Amedee-Domenech on Saturday (kick-off 2pm) needing a victory while denying their hosts a bonus point to make the knockout stages for the third season on the spin.

Jones' side did all they could by scoring four tries in a 34-10 victory against Enisei-STM last Friday and Brive beat Worcester 17-14 with a last-gasp penalty.

The Dragons will be big underdogs but their stunning victory against Stade Francais in Paris in 2014/15 and last season's excellent win in Pau, both with bonus points, gives reason to believe it's not mission impossible.

"I'm very positive if you look at this team's record in France. It's going to be a big challenge and Brive are a good side and it's a very tough environment," said Jones.

"But (we showed against) Pau and Stade Francais, this team has a style of rugby that can cause them problems but we have to deal with their power game because they will scrum and drive.

"They have a friend of mine at number eight, Sisa Koyamaibole (who played under Jones at Sale), and if he plays he is a handful and things happen around him.

"It's the usual thing with French sides, we have to move them around and play with pace and tempo.

"I am very positive about the challenge. We had disappointment out in Russia but we have to go out and deliver.

"There wasn't a lot to play for against Sale Sharks last year and we went out and performed very poorly so we know we have got to deliver, let's see if we can stand up and do it.

"It's a tough one going to France and having to win and it's going to be an interesting scenario but all I am concerned about is that it's in our hands."

That is because they did what they needed against Enisei and Jones praised the composure of his side after they scored three tries in the final quarter against to snare the vital bonus.

Replacement Rhys Buckley secured the win by mirroring his fellow hooker Rhys Thomas in scoring from a driving lineout and then number eight Harri Keddie scored a brace.

"It wasn't what we wanted at times but I know that Enisei are a stubborn team and we had to respect our opposition," said Jones.

"I thought the way we went about our business in the second half was excellent because they came back into the game with a try and the challenge for this team is the top two inches.

"The biggest positive is that we have achieved what we set out to do, we scored four tries and are going to Brive for a big game.

"I was a little bit disappointed with errors but by and large I am pleased we got a bonus point and are in contention. That it's still in our hands is the main thing and we have a chance."

If the Dragons win with a bonus point but fail to keep Brive pointless then they could still sneak into the quarters as one of three best runners-up if Harlequins are beaten convincingly at Stade Francais.
