ROB Howley believes competition for the 8 jersey will drive “world class” Taulupe Faletau to even greater heights – but has demanded the Wales bench make a bigger impact at Murrayfield.

The former Newport Gwent Dragons back row forward has to settle for a spot among the replacements for the second Test running with the trio of Sam Warburton, Justin Tipuric and Ross Moriarty retained for the Six Nations clash in Scotland.

Pontypool-raised Faletau made his return from a knee injury in the 21-16 loss to England and has been a mainstay of the side since making his Test debut against the Barbarians in 2011.

However, the Bath forward must bide his time and give the Wales management a dilemma for the round four game against Ireland by shining off the bench.

“Any player will tell you that they want to be put under pressure and they want competition for places,” said head coach Howley.

“We’ve got four world class back rows there and it is genuinely a great headache to have, to have a world class player on the bench.

“You learn off the best as players and coaches and you look at the All Blacks in particular when they go to the bench on 50/55 minutes and make a difference.

“That’s what didn’t happen against England and hopefully it will be different at Murrayfield.”

“I’m sure it will drive Toby on,” continued Howley. “He hasn’t missed many games and has been a constant in the national team.

“He will be a constant in the 23 for the future and has a huge challenge with Ross, who is playing out of position, because he’s a 6, but has been outstanding.”

The decision to bring off Moriarty with just under half an hour remaining against the English has been criticised as the Gloucester man was having a stormer.

Howley stressed the data fed back to the management team revealed he had hit the wall but believes Wales have a top talent on their hands.

“There is more growth in Ross and another level in him,” said the boss. “He has shown deft skill, his work rate and emptied the tank against England if you look at the GPS data.

“He went back to Gloucester with another six-day turnaround and fronted up (against Saracens in the Aviva Premiership), which you hugely respect.

“He is well rested and looking forward to another challenge against an experienced back row.”
