A COUPLE of Chepstow ABC youngsters are celebrating after fighting their way to titles at the Welsh Junior Championships in Swansea.

The duo of Pat Mullane and Jude Holmes triumphed in the junior A 57kg and 54kg weight classes respectively.

Stablemates Luke Conner (junior A 52kg) and Keiran Woods (junior B 50kg) just missed out on top prizes.

Mullane was first into the Portmead & Blaenymaes Community centre ring to take on Anthony Roberts from the northern division.

Boxing in his third championship final, Mullane used his strength to his advantage, dominating the bout from the first bell to the last and winning on all five judges’ scorecards.

Conner faced the far more experienced southern division king Scott Jones.

Although Conner started well and was on top in the opening exchanges, his opponent’s experience soon began to show.

As the contest went on it was clear to see that Jones was by far the better boxer, landing much cleaner shots and giving the referee no option but to stop the fight in round three.

Heads of the Valleys’ James Harris stood between Holmes and a Welsh title, but there was only going to be one winner in this showdown.

Holmes put on a masterclass of boxing, using not only his height but also a variety of skills.

He picked off the eastern division’s Harris at will and got the verdict from all five judges.

Last into the ring for Chepstow was Woods who took on Penaber ABC’s Ryan Richards.

Woods set off at a high tempo but Richards held his own, despite being on the back foot.

It was a very difficult one for the judges to score and, in the end, a split decision went the way of Richards.

Next in action for Chepstow will be Patrick Larkin and Aiden Hampsey in the Welsh youth and elite championships which are held throughout March and April.
