TYLER Morgan is relishing a duel with “gold standard” Wales centre Jonathan Davies as Newport Gwent Dragons attempt to “get some dignity back” by halting their slide against the Scarlets.

The 21-year-old from Caerleon will be one of the players looking to catch the eye of interim national coach Robin McBryde in the Guinness PRO12 double-header at Principality Stadium.

Outside centre Morgan has won three caps, played in the 2015 World Cup and featured against the Chiefs on the tour of New Zealand last summer.

Saturday (kick-off 5.15pm) presents a golden opportunity to show he is the man to wear 13 on his back against Samoa and Tonga while the man opposite him in the capital is on Lions duty.

“There’s a summer tour coming up and a lot of boys have to put their hands up,” said Morgan, who is on a national dual contract but was left out of the Six Nations squad.

“Having just one or two from the Dragons isn’t acceptable anymore and we want to get some numbers in there.

“We think we have got good players who can do that so Judgement Day is the first step on that journey.

“I’ve got three caps and would love to add to them but I’ve got a lot of work to do. I am confident that I can play at that level and just have to work my way back up there.

“I went on a bit of a lull after all the (post World Cup) injuries but I think I starting to get back to where I was and Judgement Day is a massive test for me if Jonathan Davies and Scott Williams play. It’s really exciting and Jonathan is gold standard while Scott is a quality player in attack and defence.

“With Liam Williams in there as well they have a really good back line but every team has its weakness and I think there are a few things that we could exploit.

“The way that they attack will be a challenge for me – they like to challenge the 13 channel with all sorts of runners – but the space will be there for me as well.”

The Dragons have never won at Judgement Day and are underdogs against a Scarlets side sitting fourth in the PRO12 table and needing a victory to keep ahead of Ulster in the race for the play-offs.

Kingsley Jones men, meanwhile, are 10th and are on a nine-game losing streak with their latest loss a 29-14 drubbing at then bottom club Zebre.

Morgan, who made his Test debut against Ireland at Principality Stadium, is confident that the Dragons can rise to the occasion in front of a bumper crowd.

“On that stage with a lot of people watching, everybody here has got some respect to earn and dignity to get back after recent results and after this season,” he said.

“Nobody here is happy with where we are and what we have achieved this year. We’ve got a couple of games back now to give a slight glimmer of hope. We’ve got massive improvements to make.”

Morgan burst onto the scene as a teenager in 2013/14 but, after making his PRO12 debut against the Ospreys in the second Judgement Day, his progress has been stalled by a number of injuries.

However, this season he has set a personal high of 22 appearances and has started the last eight.

He said: “Last game was my 50th appearance and according to Lyn (Jones, previous director of rugby) I’ve got to get good after 50!”I just want to carry on playing and make sure I keep the 13 jersey. I wouldn’t say I am happy with how I am doing because we are not winning, I’d rather be that impact player scoring tries and making a difference.

“With the Lions tour there will be some spaces with Wales and I’d love another couple of caps under my belt. If that comes I will be happy, if it doesn’t I will carry on working hard here.”
