SPEEDSTERS Hallam Amos and Ashton Hewitt have handed new Dragons boss Bernard Jackman a welcome double boost at the start of his Rodney Parade regime.

The Welsh region confirmed today that full-back/wing Amos is set to return to full training following a shoulder injury sustained while playing for Wales last November.

Meanwhile, wing Hewitt has resumed non-contact training after missing the final four months of last season with concussion.

The 22-year-old from Newport hasn’t played since suffering a blow to the head in the New Year’s Day defeat to the Ospreys.

Hewitt’s form towards the end of 2016, including a livewire performance against Cardiff Blues in the capital on Boxing Day, earned him a call-up to Wales’ squad for the Six Nations.

However, the uncapped back was released because he was still showing signs of concussion and he failed to reappear in 2016/17.

"It's going well and I am making progress constantly, it's just about that last hurdle now," said Hewitt from the sidelines at the Dragons’ final game of the season against the Blues.

"Four months seems like a pretty long time, especially when you can't see the injury, but I am making progress and I'm confident that I will be back next season.

"It's been a frustrating time with ambitions for the summer but it is what it is and I've got to take advantage of my time off now and make sure I am 100 per cent for next season.

"It's about taking advice from the right people and doing all my rehab, which is going well.

“I'd rather not take the risks and make sure I am 100 per cent, which I am sure I will be for next season.”

The absence of Hewitt and Amos, whose season was ended when attempting to score against Australia last autumn, hit the Dragons hard in the second half of the campaign.

They finished 11th in the Guinness PRO12 and scored just 38 tries in 22 games with then head coach Kingsley Jones bemoaning the lack of game-breakers out wide.

As well as Amos and Hewitt, the Dragons have updated supporters on the condition of their other injured stars.

“The Dragons squad returned to their Ystrad Mynach training base last week for their first pre-season under Bernard Jackman,” read a statement from the region.

“Welsh international wing Hallam Amos (shoulder) is due to return to full training following a delayed break due to his continuation of rehab.

“Whilst Ashton Hewitt has been participating fully in non-contact training.

“Hooker Elliot Dee is progressing well through his rehab following ankle surgery during the off season, whilst 18-year-old prop Chris Coleman recently underwent shoulder surgery and it is likely that he will be out of action for four to five months.

“Tavis Knoyle, who won the last of his 11 Wales caps as a scrum-half in 2013, is progressing well through his rehab following wrist surgery at the end of last season and has begun some skill-based work.

“Centre Adam Warren’s rehab from his toe injury is going well and he is where he should be with his recovery.”
