LOUI O’Brien became the third brother to pull the strings for Newport when helping the Black and Ambers beat Swansea in the Principality Premiership on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old from Caerleon followed in the footsteps of siblings and fellow fly-halves Matt and Angus when wearing 10 on his back in the dramatic 26-21 win at Rodney Parade.

With Newport facing a crunch WRU National Cup semi-final against Llandovery in Aberavon on Saturday, head coach Craig Warlow decided to ring the changes for the league encounter and field a raft of players on permit.

That led to Matt, the oldest of the three and the club’s incumbent No 10, ringing Loui to ask if he would play against the Whites.

The Cardiff University student, who normally plays for Caerleon, agreed and kicked three conversions in the bonus-point success, the last coming after James Little’s dramatic last-gasp winner.

Matt, a Dragons Academy coach, will return to the XV at the Talbot Athletic Ground after an impressive season in which the 25-year-old has moved to 85 appearances at the club, scoring 462 points.

Dragons fly-half Angus, who will represent Wales in the Commonwealth Games 7s this month, made two appearances for the Black and Ambers in 2015 but the 23-year-old played the majority of his Premiership rugby at Cross Keys.
