Dragons snap up forward pair

NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have confirmed the signing of openside flanker Nic Cudd and have also snapped up loosehead prop Owen Evans.

Cudd, 23, signs from Llanelli on a one-year deal while former Wales Under-20s prop Evans, also 23, has penned a two-year deal and arrives from Llandovery.

The Dragons needed to add another prop to their ranks to fulfil the requirement of having 10 front row forwards in their Amlin Challenge Cup squad while Cudd’s signing was necessary after Darren Waters ruptured ligaments in his knee.

Director of rugby Robert Beale said: “I am delighted that Nic and Owen are joining the Dragons and would like to thank Anthony Buchanan of Llanelli RFC and Lyndon Lewis of Llandovery RFC for their assistance in these signings.

“Nic has recently been training with the Dragons and has fitted in well with the squad and I look forward to watching him playing in a Dragons shirt.

“Owen will train with the squad on Monday for the first time and joins Aaron Coudley, Phil Price and Nathan Williams as part of the Dragons European squad.”

Once again it is youngsters that are signed, we need experienced players to compete in competitions, without old heads, experienced players, to play with and show the youngsters how to win games we will struggle again this year

Agree with spaniard, wouldn't it be more effective, certainly in the prop position, to get someone on the way down,(well getting toward the end of a career) rather than on the way up for such a short time? After all we have a good deal of "potential" there already.

I completely agree. This is just not good enough. We have masses of young promising players, in particular at forward, and we need some hard experienced pros, especially in the front row, to compete - even in the Rabobank where we are badly outmuscled. Even against Zebre we were dominated physically though showed our high potential in the backs but this will be wasted without possession and go-forward. Read on Teletext that DE is looking overseas for new players - where does this quote come from? Who might he mean?

What the Dragons are on the lookout for are CHEAP players. The youngsters come into this category but the squad will have no spine unless the get some hard men in the front five. Basics!!
