Fleur De Lys Welfare 1-0 Blaenavon Blues County motors league cup
BLAENAVON Blues travelled to Pontllanfraith for this County motors league cup game without injured skipper Mike Waite, veteran striker Darran Harris replacing him.
Fleur took early control of the game when striker Daniel Richards converted a sharp chance to put his side one up.
Fleur had by far the better of the first half, Blues keeper Lee Jones making some fine saves, with half time approaching Jones made another fine reflex save to tip the ball over the bar, while at the other end Jake Bull was denied an equaliser by a great save from the home keeper.
The Blues took the game to Fleur in the second half and Harris twice created chances for Bull, the keeper blocked the first effort and the second was over the bar.
Darryl Brenton crossed and Harris' header down was volleyed over by Craig Tanner. Jones again rescued Blues when he made a fine save and again from the resultant corner.
Bull might have equalised for his side in the last minute but a last -ditch tackle saw the danger pass.
Blues are out of the County motors league cup but they put in a good performance against a well organised home side.
Player-manager Lee Wathen had a solid game in the middle of the defence and young Lloyd Jeffries put in ninety minutes of graft in midfield.
After a torrid start to the season Blues have started to put in some spirited performances, the young players in the squad are improving every week and the future looks a lot brighter for managers Wathen and Ryan Huish.
Next Saturday Blues travel to Bryamman for a FAW Trophy cup game against Bryn Rovers.
