LEGEND of the ring Joe Calzaghe is considering a return to boxing, following in the footsteps of his father and trainer Enzo.

Calzaghe, who reigned supreme as a two-weight world champion and won all of his 46 fights as a professional, quit the sport in 2008 after closing his career with victories over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones in America.

After a brief dalliance with promoting, Calzaghe has moved away from the sport completely in the past few years to turn his attention to acting, while Enzo Calz-aghe, until recently, was training Enzo Maccarinelli.

However, Joe is now ready to follow his father’s path by becoming a trainer himself, if he can find the right fighter to motivate him into a return.

Speaking at the launch of Enzo Calzaghe’s autobiography, A Fighting Life, at Waterstones in Cardiff, Joe explained that he is feeling the itch again after being away from the sport.

“I always said about boxing that I wanted to retire from it, I didn’t want it to retire me and I lived up to that promise,” he said.

“But I miss it, every day I miss being a boxer, the special relationship I had with my dad and the happiness and contentment I felt in the ring, there was no place I was ever more comfortable. It’s four years on now and I’ve got to be honest, I have started thinking about boxing more and more and what I could do to be involved. If the circumstances were right and things were on my terms, I could imagine training a fighter, even managing a fighter, I certainly feel I have plenty of advice I could dish out.

“I’ll probably never be as amazing at it as my dad was, but what a guy to teach you the ropes!”

However, Calzaghe was adamant he won’t ever return as a fighter.

“It’s been four years and that’s too long, I won’t be coming back to fight, not a chance. I’ve proved all I need to and to do it just for the money could diminish what I’ve achieved.”
