FORMER Glamorgan batsman has reflected on a "wonderful career" after announcing his retirement, writes Chris Kirwan.

Powell, 36, cut his teeth as a cricketer with Abergavenny before spending 15 years with Glamorgan and two with Kent.

He played in the 1997 side that won the County Championship, played at Lord's when Glamorgan were beaten in the final of the 2000 Benson and Hedges Cup and featured in the team that won the National League in 2002 and 2004.

Powell scored 25 first-class centuries for Glamorgan and his innings of 299 against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham is the second highest in the county's history, bettered only by his close friend Steve James.

"The body cannot do what it used to do," said Powell. "I could probably play on for a couple of years but it's now time to move on in my life.

"I have had a wonderful career and I owe a lot to many people within cricket. I enjoyed an extremely rewarding career at Glamorgan and have also relished the opportunity to play for Kent over the last two seasons.

"I would like to thank everyone for their continued support throughout my career, including supporters at both at Glamorgan and Kent."
