THE TARGET of 1,000 runs remains the same as Will Bragg prepares for another season with Glamorgan but the left-hander will also strive to thrive in the middle throughout 2015, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 28-year-old from Cwmbran was the county's leading scorer in first-class cricket in 2014 but in the opening months of the season it seemed inevitable that he would end on a higher figure than his eventual 1,008.

Bragg started the season magnificently but only reached four figures in the final match of the season against Hampshire at the Swalec Stadium, the latest in a season that the first Glamorgan batsman reached the landmark.

"I started off with bang and was the second leading run scorer in the country halfway through the season but things drifted away, which was disappointing," he admitted.

"But I learnt quite a lot about my game and hopefully I will progress this year and put those wrongs right."

Bragg, who made 71 in the warm-up against Cardiff MCCU last week, is entering the final six months of his contract and a bumper season will only help his cause in the negotiations.

"You always set out to get 1,000 runs and I'd like to surpass that and make some big contributions in the one-day game as well but it's not always as easy as that," he said.

"I'm not a great believer in form because there are so many variables in cricket, different ways you can get out, conditions can go against you, umpiring decisions.

"There is a huge slice of luck involved in batting. Things do go against you but it's about having a clean slate in the next game because it's another opp to score a hundred.

"I suppose my job is to score runs regardless of what is going on around me; your runs are your currency as a batsman."

Bragg has been named in Glamorgan's 12-man squad for Sunday's season opener at Leicestershire, the only side to finish beneath them in Division Two last year.

They will be going up against another prolific left-hander that they know all about – the Foxes are now skippered by Mark Cosgrove, who spent four seasons in Wales between 2006 and 2011.

"Cozzy had a tremendous record for us and played a big part in the dressing room as well so it will be weird playing against him," said Bragg.

"He is a dynamic cricketer who can take the game away from you in an hour, which very few can do in county cricket."

South African batsman Colin Ingram and on-loan bowler Andy Carter are poised for Glam debuts at Grace Road.
