NEWBRIDGE hope to keep their winning habit as they enter June with a perfect record in Division One of the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League.

They head into their home fixture with Pontypridd on the back of five wins from five and sitting second behind Blackwood (courtesy of the league using the average points system rather than total).

Last weekend they triumphed by four wickets against Croesyceiliog thanks to a stunning unbeaten 113 by middle-order batsman Jamie Baker, helping chase down 271 after the loss of four early wickets, and captain James Morgan is thrilled that everyone is chipping in.

"It's been a real team effort so far this season," he said. "Everyone has been doing their fair share and we are playing with confidence.

"It was a really good win against Usk in the first game of the season and I suppose winning becomes a habit – long may it continue, but we know that we will have to play well against Pontypridd, who beat us last year.

"We are still a young side but a lot of the guys have developed, they netted hard over the winter and are getting the rewards.

"There is a really good vibe at the club at the moment with the seconds, thirds and youth doing well."

Newbridge beat Malpas to set up a Macey Cup clash with Blackwood next Friday while on Sunday they face Chepstow in the Welsh Cup.

Blackwood, who host Abergavenny tomorrow and Malpas in the Welsh Cup, have made a strong start to the season themselves with three wins out of their three fixtures to beat the weather.

The leaders were five-wicket winners against Pontypridd last weekend with Dan Wilkinson impressing with ball and bat, the Yorkshireman taking 3-35 before chipping in with 56 as a target of 201 was chased down for the loss of five wickets.

Abergavenny sit third after an excellent six-wicket win against Sudbrook in which opener Andrew Jones struck an unbeaten 124 to respond to 262-9 with 15 balls remaining.

Sixth-placed Sudbrook, for whom Division One leading running scorer Ross Lewis hit 95, attempt to bounce back when they host Usk, who enjoyed a second league win of the campaign against bottom club Radyr.

Sudbrook then take on Newport at Spytty Park in the Welsh Cup while Usk head to Panteg.

Malpas, like the basement side, have not yet got off the mark and will hope that Ryan Ward can replicate last week's efforts when the two strugglers meet in the outskirts of Cardiff.

The opener struck 121 against Chepstow only for Carwyn James to respond with 125 (and Gareth Ansell an unbeaten 94) in a nine-wicket win for the Chipmunks.

Chepstow, victors against Rogerstone in the Macey Cup last weekend, welcome fourth-placed Croesyceiliog to Mathern Road.
