BEFORE this season no club had ever won all three of the South Wales Premier Cricket League’s top honours in one summer.

That was until Newport rewrote the record books during a remarkable campaign which also saw two of their age grade teams go all the way in the Welsh Cup.

Add to that the return of county cricket to Newport for the first time in more than a quarter of a century and 2016 has turned out to be some year for the Gwent club.

And it’s not over yet as a Glamorgan Masters team make their way to Spytty Park tomorrow for a charity match against Newport’s all-conquering heroes.

On the field, the game will bring the curtain down on an amazing season for all involved at Newport – off it they still have the small matter of picking up their trophies and hosting a club awards night in November.

Looking back on a magical season, first XI skipper Michael Clayden, who will captain the hosts in their clash with a Glamorgan outfit featuring Matthew Maynard and Dean Cosker, said: “It hasn’t quite sunk in yet.

“We won the top league in 2000 when it was split into east and west but we hadn’t won it since it became the South Wales Premier League and stopped having the two regional divisions.

“At the start of the year I had an inkling we would be strong this season but to win the league, the T20, the second XI league and for two of our junior sides to win the Welsh Cup is amazing.

“In terms of the first team, I was just pleased that everybody contributed to our success, even if it was in games we didn’t win.

“I see no reason why we can’t look at retaining the league next year if we can keep the same group of players together. We don’t want to be a mid-table side next season, we need to keep pushing forward.”

He added: “The club is very healthy both on and off the field at the moment.

“The juniors section is thriving, we’ve had Glamorgan play here this summer, and we opened the museum at the ground.

“We’re also looking to set up an indoor cricket school which could take a few years, but it is still very exciting for the club.”

Head coach Mike Knight is also understandably thrilled with what has happened at his club this year.

He said: “What an amazing season! To have won any one of the trophies would have been regarded as a successful season, but to get a clean sweep of wins is a fantastic achievement by all the players in the club.

“Three cup final wins in a week followed by league titles for the first and second teams will probably never be repeated by any club.

“All this has happened in the club’s 25th anniversary season at Spytty Park, which also included the successful return of top class cricket to Newport with the Glamorgan v Pakistan A match.

“The 2016 season will be a hard one to beat.”

Meanwhile, other attractions at tomorrow’s Family Fun Day include a barbecue, raffle, inflatables and speed gun with proceeds from the day going towards the Teenage Cancer Trust. Entrance is free.
