NEWPORT County AFC defender Liam Angel helped the Wales under-17 national team to a 2-1 win over their Dutch counterparts in Newport this afternoon.

Two goals from Brandon Cooper of Swansea City gave Wales three points in their opening UEFA U17 Championship Qualifying Round tie against the Netherlands at Dragon Park.

The qualifying round is made up of 13 groups of four countries playing in one-venue mini-tournaments.

The top two from each pool progress to the Elite Round alongside the five third-placed sides with the best record against the leading pair in their groups.

Wales next play Switzerland at 4pm on Saturday and Albania at 12pm on Tuesday. All the matches are being played at Dragon Park – the Wales National Football Development Centre near Spytty Park.

Centre-back Angel, who was released by Cardiff City earlier this year, helped Wales under-16s to win the Victory Shield in 2014 and has been named on the bench for County in League Two this season.
