GOALS from Tyler Roberts, David Brooks and George Thomas ensured Wales Under-21s began their European Championship qualifying campaign with a resounding 3-0 win in Switzerland.

Roberts, currently on loan at Walsall from West Brom, put Wales ahead after seven minutes.

Sheffield United forward Brooks - who pulled out of the Welsh Under-20 squad for this summer's Toulon Tournament in order to represent eventual winners England but has since switched allegiance again - then added a second in the 27th minute after cutting in from the right and chipping the ball over the goalkeeper.

Brooks squandered a good opportunity to add a third seven minutes after half-time when his control let him down after Roberts picked him out in the box, and Manchester City teenager Matthew Smith was denied by a last-ditch tackle.

Substitute Shkelqim Demhasaj headed one of Switzerland's better chances wide in the closing stages, while Tranmere goalkeeper Luke Pilling was alert to deny Djibril Sow from distance.

Thomas, who joined Leicester from Coventry over the summer, saw a lob from distance sail wide and fired off-target with the goal at his mercy but eventually took advantage of some slack defending in stoppage time to net the third.

Newport County AFC academy graduate Regan Poole, now on loan at Northampton Town from Manchester United, played the full 90 minutes.
