SECOND-HALF goals from Ben Stevenson and Tom Eastman condemned Newport County AFC to a 2-0 defeat at Colchester United. Here's what we learned...
1. Wembley wobble is undeniable
Michael Flynn again denied that the extraordinary FA Cup run has been a distraction for his side in the league, pointing to their excellent form before and after the Leeds tie.
But after a second below-par performance of the week, it’s hard to dismiss the theory that Wednesday’s trip to the home of English football has led some players to lose a little focus.
2. Two in a row a first for Flynn
It’s only right to point out that trips to Lincoln City and Colchester United would have been tricky at any time in the season and both put in good performances to overcome County.
For Flynn it was an end to his record of never having lost successive matches in League Two and, after Wednesday is out of the way, it’s vital that they stop the rot at home to Forest Green Rovers next weekend.
3. Reid not ready
The manager has seemed reluctant to pick Tyler Reid as an orthodox right-back and this was not an auspicious first start for the Swansea City loanee.
After a promising first-half display, the 20-year-old’s poor fitness levels became evident and the fear is that his confidence will have taken a dent after a difficult second half.
4. White leaves a big hole
Mark O’Brien did a decent job for the most part as he returned to the starting XI for the first time since before Christmas but Flynn will be hoping that Ben White’s injury is not too serious.
The 20-year-old’s calmness under pressure and composure on the ball was badly missed as the Exiles’ defence struggled to contain the hosts after the break.
5. Time for changes
After a difficult week it may be time for Flynn to shake things up a little in terms of formation and personnel and utilise the squad that he’s built.
It’s been a fantastic start to 2018 but several players look in need of a rest and the likes of Paul Hayes, Josh Sheehan, Emmanuel Osadebe, Aaron Collins and even forgotten man Sean Rigg could add a fresh spark and make the Exiles less predictable.
