Newport in dire need of victory

NEWPORT v NEATH (Tomorrow, KO 12pm)

NEWPORT look to end their poor run with a much needed victory when a resurgent Neath visit Rodney Parade for tomorrow’s midday kick off.

The Black and Ambers haven’t won in the league for nearly four months since they beat the Welsh All Blacks at the Gnoll in mid November.

Last week they missed a golden chance of getting back to winning ways but blew a 27-10 half time lead to end up losing 34-27 to Bridgend at home.

Neath, coached by former Ebbw Vale head honcho Pat Horgan, will be looking for their own Gwent hat trick in recent weeks.

They knocked Cross Keys out of the Swalec Cup in the middle of February.

And last weekend they beat second placed Bedwas 29-27 in a Premiership thriller at the Gnoll, Dai Langdon landed a conversion with the last kick of the game to deprive the Bridge Field side of a draw.

Their recent form is in stark contrast to Newport’s, Neath having won five of their last six games.

The Black and Ambers have won just one of their 11 games in all competitions.

Neath have a Swalec Cup quarter-final at home to Bargoed on Saturday, March 23 in their sights.

But Horgan insists they won’t take their eye off the ball when it comes to their task tomorrow afternoon.

“It’s important we continue with the good performances and maintain the consistency throughout, starting with Newport this weekend,” he said.

“We just want to keep improving, as we have been doing all year.

“The higher we are in the table, the better everyone feels. We just try to win every game we possibly can until the end of the season and keep some consistency in our performance.”
