NEWPORT centre Jamie Murphy was banned for three months after swearing at the referee in his side’s 35-6 defeat to Llandovery just before Christmas.

A former full-time professional with the Ospreys, he got his marching orders for abusing Abertillery official Sean Brickell on December 20.

The versatile ex-Wales Under-21s back was given a double yellow card in the 66th minute of the Black and Ambers’ heavy setback at Church Bank.

Playing at outside half that day, Murphy is understood to have questioned one of the official’s decisions by using foul language before being sent to the sin bin.

As he left the field he is said to have sworn again at Mr Brickell who responded by showing him a red card.

The Welsh Rugby Union said: “(Murphy) was sent off for verbal abuse of match officials in the match against Llandovery on 20th of December 2014. 12-week suspension. Mr Murphy may resume playing the game on 1st April 2015.”

Murphy, 25, signed for Newport last summer from Principality Premiership rivals Bridgend.

His suspension deepens the Rodney Parade side’s midfield problems.

They are already without centre Dan Robinson who is set to be out of action until March with a back injury.

Nathan Edwards too has a back problem, although he could be back in time for their next game which is against Bridgend at home on Saturday, February 7.

It is also hoped fellow centre Dom Franchi will also return to action for that clash with the Ravens.

There could be further bad news on the injury front after Jonathan Morris was forced off in the 56th minute of the Black and Ambers’ fine 25-21 victory over title hopefuls Carmarthen Quins at Rodney Parade on Saturday after he scored a first half try.

The popular wing, who joined from Newbridge this season, has a shoulder problem and is due to see a specialist.

A remembrance is being held at Rodney Parade at 2pm on Wednesday to remember one of the club’s great players and servants.

Back row forward Doug Ackerman, who died at the age of 85 in Glasgow on December 9, played 230 games for Newport between 1949 and 1957.

He won seven caps for Wales Schools but was said to have been unlucky not to win the full cap that many felt he richly deserved.

After finishing his playing career with Ebbw Vale, he returned to Rodney Parade to serve on the club committee and was honorary secretary between 1982 and 1990.

His family would like to invite friends and associates for the scattering of his ashes.

Refreshments will be provided afterwards in the Bisley Suite.
