SOUTH Wales Scorpions have relocated to Caerphilly's Virginia Park for the next three seasons.

The Scorpions played three games at the ground in 2011 and enjoyed historic wins over Oldham and Keighley, the latter in front of over 500 fans, the club's biggest home crowd that season.

Co-incidentally it's Keighley who will be the Scorpions' first visitors at Virginia Park in the 2016 Kingstone Press League One season on Sunday, March 6.

The Scorpions are moving from Mountain Ash RFC and director Marc Lovering is excited about the relocation.

He said: "After gaining and listening to feedback from all, fellow director Neil Williams and I came to the conclusion that this is the right move for the club.

"Virginia Park is more accessible for the majority of players, staff and supporters with easy access to the motorway network and being just over the mountain from Cardiff with good transport links both by bus and train.

"The fact the club had led somewhat of a nomadic existence over the past few years weighed heavily our minds when considering a possible relocation.

"However, the opportunity to move to the historic Caerphilly RFC, which affords the club greater security of tenure and an opportunity to finally bed down in one location, couldn't be ignored.

"The town of Caerphilly itself also offers greater opportunity to attract support from the local population and attract sponsorship. It also allows the club to move closer to the Academy base and winter training facilities at Coleg Y Cymoedd."

Caerphilly RFC chairman Alex James said: "With Virginia Park having staged major historic European games in years gone past, the venue is more than capable of creating a new piece of history by signing this agreement which hopefully will provide the Scorpions with a platform and a base for success in the coming seasons.

"This agreement will see professional Rugby League played from Virginia Park for a minimum of three seasons and provide the local community and club with additional income whilst allowing the Scorpions to tap into local commercial revenue streams.

"The other benefits is that the club will see are improvements to the ground, with the Scorpions investing in certain elements to bring it up to the RFL standards. These include the pitch, changing facilities, stands and press facilities."
